At Weston-under-Penyard CE Primary School, we know that PE and wellbeing is a vital part of our curriculum. We believe that the subject inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in physically-demanding activities and helps them to become confident in a way which supports their minds and bodies. Therefore, we believe that our children should be physically active every day, whether through daily physical activity, PE lessons, lunchtimes, breaktimes or extra-curricular activities. We also believe that children should have the opportunity to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as sportsmanship, fairness and respect.
Computing is taught within a creative and inspiring curriculum in line with the National Curriculum.
Computing skills are taught to the children through computing lessons using our banks of laptops, iPads, Promethean Interactive Whiteboards and other digital devices. Such technology is enabling our pupils to participate in an exciting computing curriculum, as well as allowing teachers to embed the use of technology as a learning tool across the curriculum.
The curriculum is broken down into 3 areas:
Computer Science (Computing, algorithms and programming) – Children learn how digital systems (computers and networks) work and use this to learn basic computer programming.
Information Technology - children are able to use, express themselves and develop their ideas through information and communication technology
Digital Literacy to include E-Safety – Children use technology safely and responsibly, including recognising its advantages for collaboration or communication. We also include regular teaching of e-safety to ensure that children feel confident when using computers and the Internet, and know what to do if they come across something either inappropriate or uncomfortable. Our teaching of History and Geography aims to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Our curriculum has been developed to provide pupils with a comprehensive knowledge of Britain’s past and develop their understanding of significant locations in the wider world and key events in world history.
We equip pupils with the skills to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence and develop a rounded perspective and judgement.
As well as studying and learning about the wider world and significant historical events the children’s learning will be centred around the school’s locality, which provides a rich and varied landscape for the children to explore and learn from. Using the local environment will enable the children to learn through direct experience and first hand investigation as well as placing their learning in a personal context. As they progress through the school, pupils will become more aware of the process of change, the diversity of societies as well developing a greater understanding of their own identity.
We believe all children should receive outstanding teaching from expert and well qualified teaching staff. We employ specialist teachers from Herefordshire’s music service and ensure that the creative and performing arts are used to enhance children's experiences across the curriculum to develop their learning.
We want children to enjoy and take part in the creative and performing arts (drama, dance and music.)
By engaging in experiences within the arts, children recognise and represent feelings and emotions, both their own and those of others. Learning in the arts also plays an important role in supporting children and young people to recognise and value the variety and vitality of culture locally, nationally and globally.
We value the importance of children developing skills in other languages. At KS1 this is developed incidentally. At KS2 Spanish and French are taught to children across different terms.
